Research, Design and Development (RDD) is Dyson's engine room. It’s where our engineers challenge convention, build, test, fail, refine, and then fail again - all to invent technology that solves problems that others ignore. As an RDD intern you’ll be based at our technology campus in Malaysia, working as part of a 1,700-strong global team of engineers and scientists. Market Overview

Our Singapore story began in 2004 and today we have more than 1000 people working here. At the beginning of 2017 we opened our new, state of the art, Singapore Technology Centre in Science Park I, minutes from Singapore’s technology and start-up community. This new Technology Centre houses some of Dyson’s most advanced facilities including Robotics and Sensors laboratories and Smart Home, Connectivity & Mobile Applications laboratories as well as an Advanced Control Tower with the latest technology to develop its analytics driven activities. Not too far away is West Park, our flagship advanced motor manufacturing facility where we develop our autonomous robotic manufacturing capabilities – more than 300 robots assemble our Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) here. It is here that we develop our next generation of motor technology.

Function Overview

From day one you’ll be working on top secret projects using cutting edge machinery. Whichever area you join we’ll support your development, helping you understand the business and grow into the role. Accountabilities

Our internships last between 3 – 6 months and from day one you’ll be assigned to a live project team where you’ll be supporting the evolution of Dyson technology. As an intern you’ll be learning from industry experts and gaining invaluable exposure to the inner workings of Dyson. Working on live projects from the start, you’ll have the chance to make a real impact. Our interns come from a broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines from aeronautics to acoustics, mathematicians to mechanical engineers. Whatever your discipline and whichever area of RDD you join we’ll expect you to get hands-on from the start, demonstrating your technical skills and contributing to your team, whilst developing your knowledge of Dyson and our technology. During your internship we’ll support your development to help you understand Dyson and grow into the role. The rest is up to you; the chance to help shape the next generation of Dyson technology and even secure a graduate role upon completion of your studies.

Depending on where you fit best, you will have the opportunity to work in either of the areas below:


Design


•Apply innovative problem solving skills to support the vision specification for new product concepts.

•Implement great design and solve engineering problems to make products that meet all performance and functional criteria within demanding project timescales.

•Apply practical and methodical design development through prototyping, testing and evaluation of results.

•To participate in design reviews with Senior Design Engineers, Engineering Managers and Design Managers – justify design detail and collaborate with other specialists.


Mechanical Design (Manufacturing)


•Support product development, engineering evaluations or special builds •Tolerance stacks analysis

•Design for manufacturing analysis

•Conduct measurements in accordance to design specifications.

•Lab based testing/characterisation

•Build Dyson Digital Motors Prototype showcase


Motors (Manufacturing)


•Mechanical validations of Dyson Digital Motors (i.e. vibration, thermal, impact/drop, etc) in accordance to IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards or DTMs (Dyson Test Method)

•DDM performance, especially noise and airflow performance evaluations.

•Measurement system analysis (MSA/GR&R) and data analysis by using statistical tools/software.

•Conduct failure investigation and analysis on failed motors

•Root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions (design/reliability close-loop practices)


Fluid Dynamics


•Manage technical risk (Aerodynamics and Thermal) in projects.

•Drive designs forward and ensure correct decisions are made at all stages of the design process through experimental validation and other relevant analysis methods

•Provide and co-ordinate analytical support to new and existing products.

•Liaise with development teams to ensure an effective transfer of technology into our product range.

•Promote best practice in Aerodynamics and Thermal design

•Identify and develop new opportunities/tools/methods with the aim of enhancing the performance, reliability and time to market of Dyson products.


Acoustic & Vibration


•Provide, co-ordinate and support Noise and Vibration across RDD for new and existing projects.

•Drive designs forward based on sound engineering knowledge and ensure correct decisions are taken at all stages of the design process with regards to Noise and Vibration.

•Identify and develop new opportunities/tools/methods with the aim of enhancing the performance, reliability and time to market of Dyson products.

 

Manufacturing Engineering


•Understanding of factory automation

•Good understanding of mechanical drawing

•Good understanding of process / equipment / Quality engineering knowledge

•Good issue troubleshooting knowledge and mindset

Skills

The internship programme is competitive so you’ll need to be academically strong and have the right to work in the country of your application. You’ll be studying a technical degree, such as: product design, design engineering, design and innovation, mechanical engineering. A passion for technology is essential. You’ll be able to evidence how you have applied technical knowledge to solve problems either through your studies, own projects or extra-curricular activities. As you’ll be contributing from the start you’ll be hungry to learn and ready to get stuck in to make an impact.
