Assistant to Global Manufacturing and Procurement Director

Competitive

Singapore, Singapore

Description

The Executive Assistant reports directly to the Global Manufacturing and Procurement Director and has a wide range of responsibilities. The most basic of these responsibilities include managing the Directors’ calendar, booking and coordinating his frequent travel needs, as well as catering to any ad-hoc requirement as expected of an assistant. This should not account for more than 20% of the work load and should soon become routine.

Dyson Overview

Things move quickly at Dyson. In twenty years, what began with one man and one idea has grown into a global technology company, with 6,000 people and a presence in over 70 countries. From Malmesbury to Malaysia to the US to Australasia and many countries in between, we’ve sold over 80 million machines.

And it’s just the start. From 2016 our Malmesbury HQ is doubling its footprint. The US, our biggest market, is doubling their sales scope. And new frontiers are opening up across South East Asia and beyond. More people, more ideas and more space for more invention. The next four years will be our biggest and busiest yet.

Market Overview

Our Singapore story began in 2004 and today we have more than 1000 people working here. At the beginning of 2017 we opened our new, state of the art, Singapore Technology Centre in Science Park I, minutes from Singapore’s technology and start-up community. This new Technology Centre houses some of Dyson’s most advanced facilities including Robotics and Sensors laboratories and Smart Home, Connectivity & Mobile Applications laboratories as well as an Advanced Control Tower with the latest technology to develop its analytics-driven activities.

Not too far away is West Park, our flagship advanced motor manufacturing facility where we develop our autonomous robotic manufacturing capabilities – more than 300 robots assemble our Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) here. It is here that we develop our next generation of motor technology.

Function Overview

It’s one thing to solve a problem that’ll change technology forever. But turning that idea into a reality takes solving many more problems – and success is ultimately measured, not by the thinking, but by the product. Our Manufacturing department supports over 1,000 Dyson engineers worldwide turning ideas into ground-breaking technology. Involved early in the design, we identify materials, pre-empt production issues and find ways to build more efficiently. Yet robustly. From designing the machines, to the machines that build the machines, we’re helping to shape the future of technology.

Accountabilities

Beyond the role as an assistant the position offers the unique opportunity of being exposed to the workings of the very highest levels of management, decision making and information. A key responsibility will be the regular consolidation of data from the Directors’ direct reports, to make sense of, validate and summarise into a succinct report. The role is expected to be able to brief the Director with opinions and insights. This provides an excellent opportunity to be critiqued, to learn and to be mentored by a Director.

Also expected of the role is a basic understanding of Project Management, to be able to structure and run small to medium sized projects starting from articulation of the business need, project buy-off, stakeholder management, execution, reporting and following through to closure. Periodically the Director will have to make presentations to the COO, Board of Directors or be the speaker at an official event/training. The role is accountable for mobilising the necessary resources, consolidating data and making a finished and presentable presentation.

The position also plays a very important role within the larger Operations team, providing support in whatever way he/she can, depending on available bandwidth and the nature of the request. This requires a level of maturity, people skills and the ability to say “No”.

Overall the role is aimed at providing bright and promising young talent with an opportunity to be mentored towards a career path of his/her capability and preference. It allows for the building of a strong and beneficial professional network for someone who is in the early stages of their career and is looking to focus on learning and growing while keeping an open mind.
